Does Your Quality Standard Require ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation?

Many quality managers assume that ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is universally required for calibration to count as traceable. It isn't. Some standards explicitly require it. Others require traceable calibration but leave the specific method up to you, with accreditation as the strongest available option rather than a mandate. Knowing which category your quality standard falls into changes what you actually need to require from a calibration provider, and what you don't need to overpay for.

 

What Does “Traceable” Actually Mean?

Traceable calibration means a measurement can be linked, through an unbroken chain of comparisons, back to a national or international measurement standard, with each link in that chain having a stated, documented uncertainty. A calibration certificate that simply says “calibrated” without documenting that chain and its uncertainty doesn't provide traceability in the sense your quality system actually needs.

 

Explicit Requirements vs. Preferred Methods

Quality standards generally fall into one of two categories when it comes to calibration accreditation:

AS9100

Preferred method

Similar to ISO 9001 — requires traceable measurement but accreditation is the recommended path, not an explicit mandate in every case

ISO 13485

Preferred method

Requires calibration traceable to recognized standards; accreditation supports but is not always explicitly mandated by the standard itself

 

What NIST-Traceable Calibration Certificates Should Include

A certificate claiming NIST traceability should document:

  • The specific reference standards used, and their own calibration history back to NIST
  • Measured values at each tested point, not just a pass/fail statement
  • Measurement uncertainty for each result
  • The date of calibration and recommended next calibration date
  • The accrediting body and accreditation number if the calibration was performed by an accredited lab

A certificate missing any of these doesn't fully support a traceability claim, even if it says “NIST traceable” somewhere on the page.

 

Why This Matters Beyond the Audit Checkbox

Getting this distinction right protects you two ways. If your standard explicitly requires accreditation, working with a non-accredited provider creates a compliance gap that shows up at the worst possible time, typically during a customer or certification audit. If your standard only prefers accreditation, understanding that gives you room to make a cost-informed decision rather than assuming every calibration need requires the most expensive option available.
