Many quality managers assume that ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is universally required for calibration to count as traceable. It isn't. Some standards explicitly require it. Others require traceable calibration but leave the specific method up to you, with accreditation as the strongest available option rather than a mandate. Knowing which category your quality standard falls into changes what you actually need to require from a calibration provider, and what you don't need to overpay for.
Traceable calibration means a measurement can be linked, through an unbroken chain of comparisons, back to a national or international measurement standard, with each link in that chain having a stated, documented uncertainty. A calibration certificate that simply says “calibrated” without documenting that chain and its uncertainty doesn't provide traceability in the sense your quality system actually needs.
Quality standards generally fall into one of two categories when it comes to calibration accreditation:

A certificate claiming NIST traceability should document:
A certificate missing any of these doesn't fully support a traceability claim, even if it says “NIST traceable” somewhere on the page.
Getting this distinction right protects you two ways. If your standard explicitly requires accreditation, working with a non-accredited provider creates a compliance gap that shows up at the worst possible time, typically during a customer or certification audit. If your standard only prefers accreditation, understanding that gives you room to make a cost-informed decision rather than assuming every calibration need requires the most expensive option available.
