Temperature Uniformity Surveys and Calibration


A TUS and temperature calibration are related, but they serve different purposes.

Temperature calibration compares the measurement from a specific instrument or sensor against a known reference to determine its measurement accuracy.

A Temperature Uniformity Survey evaluates how temperature is distributed throughout a chamber or other defined work area.

In many applications, both may be important. Calibrated sensors provide confidence in the temperature measurements collected during a TUS, while the survey itself helps evaluate the temperature performance of the equipment as a whole.

What is the Purpose of a Temperature Uniformity Survey?

A Temperature Uniformity Survey evaluates how evenly temperature is distributed throughout the work area of temperature-controlled equipment. By using multiple calibrated temperature sensors, a TUS can identify temperature variations, including potential hot and cold spots, and provide documented information about the equipment's temperature performance.

How Does a Temperature Uniformity Survey Work?


During a TUS, multiple calibrated temperature sensors are positioned at predetermined locations throughout the equipment's usable work area. The sensors are connected to a data acquisition system that records temperature measurements over a specified period.

The equipment is then operated at the temperature or temperatures being evaluated. As the survey progresses, temperature readings from each sensor are collected and analyzed to determine how temperature varies throughout the work zone.

The exact number and placement of sensors, survey duration, temperature setpoints, and acceptance criteria can vary depending on the equipment, application, and applicable requirements.

Once the survey is complete, the recorded data can be reviewed to evaluate temperature uniformity and determine whether the equipment meets the specified acceptance criteria.

What Happens After a TUS?


After the survey is completed, the collected temperature data is analyzed and documented. The results can be compared with the applicable acceptance criteria to determine whether the equipment's temperature uniformity meets the specified requirements.

If temperature variations are identified, the results can help point to areas that may require further investigation, adjustment, or corrective action.

Documentation from the survey can also provide a record of the equipment's temperature performance for quality and process-control purposes.
